Philippine troops rely on a sympathetic public
By WARREN P. STROBEL
McClatchy Newspapers

PATIKUL, Philippines -- Philippine Marine Maj. Gen. Juancho Sabban strides through a large roadside field, gesturing to the location where volunteers are spending their Sunday building homes for the homeless.

"This was once a battleground," he says. "It was abnormal for you to see people gathering like this. But now it's normal."

Lush with palm trees and jungle greenery, Patikul municipality used to be one of the most dangerous addresses on Jolo island, a favorite ambush point for Moro Islamic Liberation Front insurgents and a haunt for the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf Group.

Much of the southern Philippines, however, remains violent. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which seeks an autonomous Muslim homeland, and the government have been engaged in their fiercest fighting since 2003.

However, places such as Jolo and Basilan - a larger island to the north - that once were the Filipino equivalent of Iraq's Anbar province have remained relatively calm since the fighting resumed in mid-August.

U.S. military commanders here give much of the credit to Sabban, and he said that U.S. forces are indispensable to his effort.

Sabban's baby-faced demeanor and soft voice belie a complicated past. As a junior officer, he was among those who helped overthrow dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986. Three years later, he participated in a coup attempt against President Corazon Aquino. He spent several years in jail and then on the run.

Sabban's marines took over from the Philippine army here three years ago, and began implementing a "hearts and minds" strategy to win over the populace. He calls it "a scramble for the masses."

It was a sharp change in approach for the Filipino government, which over the years had alternated between negotiating peace with the rebels and attempting to bludgeon them into submission.

Sabban gives his troops human rights training, and seems convinced - and proud - that the populace has shifted to his side and away from the rebels.

One day, a local village chief told Sabban's troops that Abu Sayyaf leader Khaddafy Janjalani and 150 of his men had just passed nearby. Filipino troops killed Janjalani in a firefight on Sept. 4, 2006, dealing the group a blow from which it's yet to recover. Sabban recounted the story in an interview a mile from where Janjalani died.

"Now we have early-warning devices all over the jungle," he says, referring to sympathetic civilians.

U.S. Special Operations Forces play a supporting role that's highly sensitive politically. Opponents of the U.S. military presence here charge that Washington is trying to re-establish the Philippines bases it closed in the early 1990s, an intention American commanders deny.

U.S. Army Col. Bill Coultrup, the commander of the 500-person Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines, includes a slide in his standard PowerPoint briefing that warns: "Any perception of U.S. offensive or unilateral operations equals U.S. strategic failure in the Philippines."

So, while American funds help pay for rebuilt bridges and refurbished wells, U.S. soldiers don't do a single good deed without Philippine military officers beside them, ensuring that the Filipinos and the government in Manila get the credit.

Officials at the Pentagon and the State Department say that Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, an early convert to President Bush's war on terror, has every incentive to keep the arrangement going for as long as possible - and with it the flow of U.S. money and expertise.

Filipino commanders say they still need U.S. assistance, particularly in the form of sophisticated intelligence.

The U.S. troops "have been a very big factor in our success here," Sabban said. "If the U.S. forces will be out, it will be a big blow to our strategy."

Weekend Snapshot: Kids on Break

Thank God, Kids Are On Break....

After two weeks of studying for the mastery and the quarterly exams, I thought I'm back in grade school. But this time, it's different. My 6th grader kid spend so much time studying all the names of our leaders and their biographies, even the Constitution for their Social Studies exams. The third grade kid studied the usual facts about the earth, plants and animals; about Noah, Moses, the prodigal son and some saints for their CLE . But she had a hard time studying for Math, they had the usual problem solving using multiplication and simplifying fractions plus finding the GCF. While my only son, who's in grade 1, exerted extra time and effort reviewing for Math and Makabayan (Social Studies) again.

I'm just thankful the exams are over. They're on a semestral break. Now we can all relax and unwind. Kids are now looking forward to Halloween's trick or treatin' activities

Weekend Snapshot: Pantene Bloggers' Party

Last Friday, I attended a bloggers' party sponsored by Pantene at Taste Asia (Mall of Asia). As usual, there's so much good food, drinks overflowing and wonderful people around. Thanks to Aileen Apolo for the invite. Check her site for the monthly bloggers' event. There's another one coming up this 31st.

At the party, I met newbie bloggers as well as the old-timers. We had some chikahan (chats) and picture-taking. I grabbed this photo courtesy of Mitch, a mommy-blogger I finally met at the party. She came all the way from Subic just to attend this event.

How to Lose Weight...

I have friends who have gained weight after they gave birth or went on a holiday or simply loves to eat like me. Speaking of holidays, another big celebration is coming up soon, Christmas. To prepare myself to more parties, buffet, social gatherings, cocktails, I feel I should go slow now on carbs, soda and my all time favorites, chocolates. And I should use our old stationary bike here, which hubs is bugging me to use. Better yet, I would follow these weight-losing tips;

*Replace fizzy drinks with water.

*Swap whole milk for semi-skimmed, or semi-skimmed for skimmed.

*Eat less lunch than usual. For example, make your own sandwich and limit the use of margarine/butter and full-fat mayonnaise (store-bought sandwiches often contain both).

*Stop taking sugar in tea and coffee.

*Have smaller portions of the food you enjoy.

*Avoid having a second helping at dinner. Limit your rice intake.

*Cut out unhealthy treats such as confectionary, sugary biscuits and crisps between meals.

*Eat more veggies and fruits.

*Cut down on beer, alcohol or soda.

*Walk your way to the nearby church, grocery/mall.

*Spend some time to exercise, burn some calories. Do house chores. Go biking with your kids. Or walk around your place with hubby or friends.

Or if you're not the type who goes to the gym, who have no time to exercise or do some walking, and still you don't want to skip your meals. Try this,

Another Impeachment Case...

4th Impeachment Case vs GMA Filed in the House
By EDMER F. PANESA/ Manila Bulletin

Administration critics yesterday lodged a new impeachment complaint at the House of Representatives against President Arroyo, signaling the start of the so-called "impeachment season."

The 97-page complaint, filed by 19 individuals led by businessman Jose "Joey" de Venecia III and endorsed by three partylist lawmakers, is the fourth impeachment try against Mrs. Arroyo in four years.

The Chief Executive has survived three attempts to impeach her in the past three years, including one that accused her of rigging the 2004 presidential election with the help of then Elections Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano and some loyal generals.

According to the House secretariat, the De Venecia complaint is the first to be "accepted" by the House since the one-year ban on the filing of a new complaint against the President expired last Saturday. For the rest of the story click here.

My thoughts---nothing will come out of it. They simply don't have the numbers in Congress. This is a futile exercise. We have no choice but wait til 2010.

Gabbie Turned Eight

My daughter, Maria Cristina Gabrielle celebrated her 8th birthday last October 10, 2008. She woke up early and dressed up for school. She doesn't want me to tell her teachers that it's her birthday. So I surprised her, brought spaghetti for her teachers and classmates and gave them chocolates, too (melamine-free, he he he). We fetched her in school and had dinner at Dencio's Capitol Golf. A day after her birthday, we treated her again at Timezone Glorietta and Starbucks where she feasted on iced chocolate drink, cookies, brownies and strawberry cheesecake. I'm sure she's enjoyed her special sweet day.

Here's a slideshow for you my dear Gabbie, we love you....

An Apple A Day: Facts and Tips

The old saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" has been justified by its many health-rich properties. Apples are excellent detoxifiers and apple juice can destroy viruses in the body.

In one recent study , Riu Hai Liu of Cornell University, has found although apples has only a small amount of vitamin C, eating 100 grams of apple provides the same amount of antioxidant activity as taking 1,500 milligrams of the same vitamin.

Just make sure you do not take too many apple seeds because it could be toxic if taken in large amount.

Benefits of Apples

1. Apple cleans teeth and strengthens gum

2. Will make the cholesterol level lower

3. Detoxify the body and has an antiviral property

4. Apple will also prevent constipation because it helps digestion

5. One large apple supplies almost 30% of minimum amount of fiber that should be consumed daily

The use :

1. For people who suffer from gout and rheumatism, eat apple regularly because it will aid healing

2. Eating 2 apples a day will reduce your cholesterol level up to 10 %

3. Drinking an apple juice, 3 times a day, is said to prevent virus from settling in the body.

4. Another benefit of apple is for those who have problem with their stomach. If you have problem with indigestion, eat apples before meals.

5. Grated apple, when mixed with live yogurt may be helpful in cases of diarrhea

Tips :

1) Never buy apples that have not been kept cold since they can be over-ripe in a few days.

2) Apples should be hard. If you can dent an apple with your finger, DO NOT BUY IT.

3) Keep your apples refrigerated. If not, it will decay fast.

4) To prevent browning, rub the cut surfaces with a mixture of lemon juice and water.

5) Canadian researchers analyzing eight popular varieties found that the old standby, Red Delicious, and an apple called Northern Spy contain more disease-fighting antioxidants in their skin and flesh than any other studied. In English this means red apples are better than other apples.

6) Instead of drinking coffee (for call center people or students studying for exams), apple can make you stay awake on night time.

Who Wants to Buy Pearls?

I was surfing the net for a Christmas gift for myself (just like my good friend Cookie). And I couldn't help but look at this. Since I don't have extra moolah to buy this, am just wishing Santa would give me one. As if on cue, another good friend from the south promised to send me one. In fact, she offered me to add this on my business here in Manila. I will be selling/ trading south sea pearls (white, pink, lavender, black and gold) soon...Please watch out for it. To place an order, just send an email. We can have the pearls shipped to your place.

Movie Review: Righteous Kill

THE PLOT:

A pair of veteran New York City police detectives are on the trail of a vigilante serial killer. After 30 years as partners in the pressure cooker environment of the NYPD, highly decorated Detectives David Fisk and Thomas Cowan should be ready for retirement, but aren't. Before they can hang up their badges, they are called in to investigate the murder of a notorious pimp, which appears to have ties to a case they solved years before. Like the original murder, the victim is a suspected criminal whose body is found accompanied by a four line poem justifying the killing. When additional crimes take place, it becomes clear the detectives are looking for a serial killer, one who targets criminals that have fallen through the cracks of the judicial system. His mission is to do what the cops can't do on their own--take the culprits off the streets for good. The similarities between the recent killings and their earlier case raise a nagging question: Did they put the wrong man behind bars?

MY REVIEW: good combination for the box-office appeal, but, the plot is kinda' boring. I give it a 2-star just because am a fan of Robert De Niro & Al Pacino.

Pio's Report Card

Two weeks ago, I got my kids' report card. Am so happy to share my only son's progress report card for the first quarter. Bear with me, am just so happy and feels so proud for my Pio. He's my little fellow who spends so much time in the computer, playing games and watching the Disney Channel. Whenever I ask him if we can review or study together, he'll answer that he has studied his lessons already in school. True enough, I don't have to make kulit. On the other hand, I opted not to post Nicole and Gabbie's grades. They're kinda shy about it. Nicole is getting ready though for the entrance exams at the Philippine Science High School and the Quezon City Science High (both DOST managed schools). Anyway, here's what Pio worked hard for...

Belo Services and Fees

A few months ago, I was curious on how much Dra. Belo charges for the various services she offers on her clinic. I've only tried (several times) their facial treatment at Forever Flawless. So I emailed them and asked for different procedures and fees. Actually my kid has a scar on her back from a major operation when she was barely a year old. The scar is growing as she grows. It's below her nape. I'm kinda' worried that it would affect the skin on her back. Anyway, here's the reply on my queries.

A Murderer Walks Free...

After 13 years, convicted killer Claudio Teehankee Jr. was released from the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City last week.

Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez on Monday said President Arroyo has approved the granting of executive clemency to Teehankee by virtue of a letter dated October 2 to the Office of the NBP Director. Gonzalez said Teehankee walked a free man last October 2 for “good behavior.” He has been detained since 1991 for the murder of Roland John Chapman and Swedish-Filipino Maureen Hultman.

Teehankee is the son of the late former Chief Justice Claudio Teehankee Sr and brother of former Justice Undersecretary Manuel Teehankee, an Arroyo appointee. He was convicted in 1995 and was sentenced to one count of reclusion perpetua and one count of reclusion temporal, which carry a jail term of 20 to 40 years and 12 to 20 years, respectively.

“The President considered his (Teehankee) good behavior as enough reason to grant him clemency,” Gonzalez said.

The Hultman-Chapman murder case was a case that gained wide publicity in the country during the early 1990's. This is due to the fact that Claudio Teehankee, Jr., the perpetrator of the crime, was the son of the late former Chief Justice Claudio Teehankee, Sr. and the brother of former Justice Undersecretary Manuel Teehankee. The case helped sway the public view on crime and restore the death penalty in the Philippines.

Court records show that Chapman, Hultman, and another friend, Jussi Leino, were coming home from a party at around three o'clock in the morning of July 13, 1991. Leino was walking Hultman home along Mahogany street in Dasmariñas Village, Makati City when Teehankee came up behind them in his car. He stopped the two and demanded that they show some identification. Leino took out his wallet and showed Teehankee his Asian Development Bank ID. Teehankee grabbed the wallet. Chapman, who was waiting in a car for Leino, stepped in and asked Teehankee: “Why are you bothering us?” Teehankee drew out his gun and shot Chapman in the chest, killing him instantly. After a few minutes, Teehankee shot Leino, hitting him in the jaw. Then he shot Hultman on the temple before driving away. Leino survived and Hultman died two months later in hospital due to brain hemorrhages caused by the bullet fragments. Teehankee was arrested several days later on the testimony of several witnesses. The witnesses were Domingo Florence and Agripino Cadenas, private security guards, and Vincent Mangubat, a driver, all three being employs of residents of the village.

Claudio Teehankee, Jr. was convicted by the the Supreme Court of the Philippines in 1995 of murders of Roland John Chapman and Maureen Hultman and sentenced to one count of reclusión perpetua and two counts of reclusión temporal. As of 2006, he was incarcerated for thirteen years at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.

On October 6, 2008, Sec.Raul M. Gonzalez confirmed Claudio Teehankee Jr.'s release from prison by virtue of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo' commutation of sentence: "Everything went by the rules here. His [Teehankee’s] records have been reviewed by the Board of Pardons and Parole before a recommendation was given to the President."

* My thoughts- If the likes of Mr. Teehankee and Rolito Go are roaming the streets of Metro Manila again, maybe some "guys" can do what Al Pacino did in the movie Righteous Kill.

Tagged: Kids' Names

Aiza of Typing Free tagged me to do this meme, this is about the story behind or the meaning of my kids' names. Since I have four kids and each of them has 3 names, all the girls have Maria on their name. Here's what I've got;

Maria- after Mama Mary's name, means the perfect one (in Hebrew), I also have Maria on my birth certificate and I chose this name for my girls.

Aurora- (Latin-Italian origin) after my mom's name, means daybreak/dawn

Nicole- (French origin) named after the famous Australian actress, means victory of the people

Cristina- (Spanish-Italian origin) means a christian, hubby chose this name

Gabrielle- (Hebrew-French origin) means heroine of God, I chose this after the name of one character in Sunset Beach and it also reminds me of Gabriela Silang

Angelica- (Latin-Italian)-means angelic messenger, hubby chose the name for our youngest child

Beatrice- (Italian origin)- means joy, I really like this name, it goes with Maria Angelica

Pio- named after Padre Pio, hubby chose this name for our only son

Miguel- (Hebrew-Spanish origin), means "who resembles God", after hubby's name (Michael)

There, I'm done. I'm not tagging anyone, feel free to do it. Do you know the meaning of your kid's names? Do your research. Have fun.

Congrats, Sis!

My sister Budeck just graduated from her masteral degree at the Kobe University. She took up International Studies. And I can say she's really one diligent student. She took up Accounting in college at the University of Santo Tomas. Worked for a few years at Asian Bank then transferred to the Philippine Senate as budget analyst (working with the Senators during budget deliberations). She pursued Theology at the Don Bosco School of Theology while working. Not content with that, she joined me in law school where we became classmates. She's the one who's always present in class while I go to the movies with hubby, he he he. She has received grants/scholarships abroad in the past, really wanted to study, learn and learn more.

Now that she has added feathers in her cap, she plans to work at the Department of Foreign Affairs, if possible at the Philippine Embassy in Japan.

To my very generous and kind sister, wish you more success sis. We love you. We're proud of you.

The Philippine Blog Awards Night

Last Sunday, September 21, we attended the most anticipated blog event, The Philippine Blog Awards. It was held at One Esplanade, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City. It was such a successful event, attended by quite a number of bloggers (professionals and newbie as well). It was even made more special with the attendance of Presidentiable, Senator Mar Roxas as guest speaker. Kudos to the organizer and its President Noemi Dado for a job well done. Cheers!

Charice and Celine Dion Duet

Charice made it again. Another dream came true for her. This time, it's a duet with Celine Dion.

In the concert, the Canadian international star first told the life story of Charice. "This young girl's name is Charice. I'm so excited. She's 16 years old and she's from the Philippines. Let me tell you she has a voice that can literally blow the roof off Madison Square. But the real story is, Charice and her mom escaped a terrifying experience and had to leave Charice's violent father. You know, to start a life on their own, Charice vowed to save her mom from life's desperation. Through prayers and dreams and God-given talent, an incredible voice, Charice entered and won every singing contest in her native country and eventually got noticed. By such a fortunate chance people saw the show on Oprah and Oprah wanted to take her under her wing and David Foster joined them.

"I had a chance to see Charice perform one of my songs in Oprah last week. I have a little difficulty to talk right now because I met Charice and I'm so emotional and so I'm searching and looking for my words trying to control my emotion. I invited here to come her tonight to sing with me...,” said Celine Dion.

We're so proud of you Charice.

My Choice of Washer & Dryer

We opened another branch of our laundry shop last September 1 at the New Intramuros Village/ North Susana Executive Village. The place is near The Grand Terrace and Puregold, about two blocks away to Tandang Sora.

Having another branch meant additional machines. We bought ours at Excellence Trading, the distributor of Whirlpool units/products here in Manila. If I need heavy-duty units, I go straight to Whirlpool. I've tried other brands before but it's only for our personal needs. The Whirlpool washing machine and dryer can handle 10 kgs of clothes in one load. It works so fast also. Our units can wash 150 kgs of clothes (comforters, linens, curtains, stuffed toys as well) for a day. I really trust this brand, it's so reliable.

A Day at Dampa

Last Sunday, my family went to Dampa at Macapagal Avenue. It's been awhile since the last time we all ate there. Since me and my kids are seafood lovers, we were so happy when hubby decided to treat us there. You can just see the smile on Pio's face. First, we bought the seafoods on the market and have them cooked at Mom and Dad resto. The resto's staff suggested the dish they can do with our chosen seafood.

The resto is so clean (same with the bathroom), staff are friendly, service is good and they really cook well. Here, take a peek of what we had at Mom and Dad resto.

Doctor, Doctor We Are Sick...

A week ago, me and my kids are all sick. Blame it on the weather, too much heat in the morning 'til afternoon, then, it rains by night time. My kids had asthma attacks, the youngest got dehydrated, and I had a bad cold which triggers my migraine too. We went to see a doctor, had our laboratory tests (CBC, urinalysis, X-ray) and bought medicines at the Mercury Drugstore. I also surfed the net for "2nd opinion".

I took Sinutab for my colds, Norgesic for my migraine and Vitamin C & E. While my kids had Neozep Syrup (for colds), Biogesic syrup (for fever), Ambroxol (for cough), Pedialyte (for dehydration) and Asmalin (Salbutamol) nebule for their nebulization. Kids are also taking Ceelin and Appebon with Iron as their vitamins. We all drank gallons of fruit juice, ate veggies and slept almost the whole day for one week. I didn't send my kids to school so they can rest.

Thank God, we're all ok now.

Remedies for Bad Colds

For one week now, I'm having a bad cold. I've been takings meds, drinking lots of juice and taking vitamin C as well. I've consumed tons of tissue paper. My cheekbones hurt already each time I blow my nose. This cold is making my head aches too. What more should I do? Instead of going to the doctor, I surfed the net, here's what I've found....

Cold remedies: What works

If you catch a cold, you can expect to be sick for about a week. But that doesn't mean you have to be miserable. These remedies may help:

  • Water and other fluids. You can't flush a cold out of your system, but drinking plenty of liquids can help. Water, juice, clear broth or warm lemon water with honey helps loosen congestion and prevents dehydration. Avoid alcohol, coffee and caffeinated sodas, which make dehydration worse.
  • Salt water. A saltwater gargle — 1/2 teaspoon salt dissolved in an 8-ounce glass of warm water — can temporarily relieve a sore or scratchy throat.
  • Saline nasal sprays. Over-the-counter saline nasal sprays combat stuffiness and congestion. Unlike nasal decongestants, saline sprays don't lead to a rebound effect — a worsening of symptoms when the medication is discontinued — and most are safe and nonirritating, even for children.
  • Chicken soup. Generations of parents have spooned chicken soup into their sick children. Now scientists have put chicken soup to the test, discovering that it does have effects that might help relieve cold and flu symptoms in two ways. First, it acts as an anti-inflammatory by inhibiting the movement of neutrophils — immune system cells that participate in the body's inflammatory response. Second, it temporarily speeds up the movement of mucus through the nose, helping relieve congestion and limiting the amount of time viruses are in contact with the nose lining. So which is better, homemade or canned? Researchers at the University of Nebraska compared homemade chicken soup with canned versions and found that many, though not all, canned chicken soups worked just as well as soups made from scratch.
  • Over-the-counter cold medications. Nonprescription decongestants and pain relievers offer some symptom relief, but they won't prevent a cold or shorten its duration, and most have some side effects. If used for more than a few days, they can actually make symptoms worse. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that parents avoid such cold medicines for children younger than age 2. And they are evaluating the safety of these medications in older children.

Keep in mind that acetaminophen can cause serious liver damage or liver failure if taken in high doses. It's common for people to take it in addition to flu medications that also contain acetaminophen, which can lead to drug overdoses. Read the labels of any cold medication carefully to make sure you're not overdosing.

  • Humidity. Cold viruses thrive in dry conditions. Dry air also dries the mucous membranes, causing a stuffy nose and scratchy throat. A humidifier can add moisture to your home, but it can also add mold, fungi and bacteria if not cleaned properly. Change the water in your humidifier daily, and clean the unit at least once every three days.

Green Bucks Weekly Questions

Teacher Julie of GreenBucks has been posting her weekly questions and I haven't participated since. Now, finally I found the time to answer all her questions in one sitting. Here goes my answers.

Weekly Questions:

1. If you are married would you know if your husband is reading your blog? If you are in a relationship, would you know if your partner is reading your blog?

I know each time hubby reads my blog, he gets annoyed and tells me not to put his pic or my kids' pics on my blog for security reasons. Sometimes, he would ask me why do I have to tell the world where I've been or what I've been doing, or how am I feeling. Sadly, hubby doesn't approve of my blogging.

2. Let’s say it IS possible to have that one chance to be another person for a day. Who would you choose to be and why?

I would like to be Princess Diana, and see how she has touched the lives of millions of people in the world. Or U.S. President John F. Kennedy for the same reason.

3. What were your favorite books as a child, specifically in your elementary school years?

As far as I can remember, I always read Nancy Drew way back in grade school. And the thick Bible (with illustrations just like in comics) which Dad gave me and my sisters.

4. What valuable lessons have you learned from your father?

My Dad would always tell us that education is only the best treasure we can rely on in life. He also taught us that we should always do good to people no matter who they are, what they have (or have not) or what they can (or can't) do to us in return.

5. What lies ahead for me and my family? Do we know where we are heading?

I can foresee a bright future for me and my family with God's help and guidance.

6. Can you describe yourself as a friend? Or how do your friends describe you as a friend?

As a friend, I can say I'm loyal, generous and reliable. I can listen to my friends' problems for hours and give comfort, will fight for my friend even if the world is against her, will give whatever I have if she's in need.

7. If we set aside an extra hour each day to do what we would rather do and not what we should be doing, what would you choose to do?

I would be reading the books on my night stand (which had gathered dusts) simply because I don't have extra time to do so.

8. How would you like to spend your special day, your birthday?

I would like to spend it in a beach resort with hubby, my kids, my parents, my siblings and few close friends.

9. What are the five simple pleasures that give you, well, simple pleasures?

seeing my kids play and laugh their hearts' out....

when my kids massage my legs and arms even when I didn't ask for it....

eating sweet corn while chatting with my kids....

a day at the nearby salon for facials and foot spa....

eating coffee crumble ice cream while watching my fave soaps....

10. I want to know your thoughts about the little girl in this photo.

I really feel disgusted every time I see kids especially girls roaming the streets in undershirts. The parents should have not allowed her to go out in that clothes. With the number of gruesome crimes happening everyday to little children, kids should be home studying or playing with their siblings and should not be exposed to dangers in the streets.

11. Should people heed the call of the Catholic Church to not use artificial means of contraception/reproductive health products and services OR should they go ahead, talk to their doctors and plan for how they want to practice family planning.?

Even when I'm Catholic, I believe people or couples should practice family planning the way they wanted it to be, not because of what the Church tells them to do. Will the Church help them raise 10 kids (for lots of couple with meager income) or support every needs of the family? I don't think the Church can do that even with their huge funding from the community or from Rome.

12. If you were an Olympian, what sport would you be participating in?

I would probably be participating in swimming or taekwondo because I wanted to do a lot of kicking....Seriously, I have always been fascinated with these sports. Swimming is a great sport especially for those with health problems while taekwondo can do wonders with the body's reflexes.

13. If you were to decide what advocacy would you like to campaign for as an advocate or being involved in a foundation, what sector of the society would you like to serve?

I would join a foundation which helps the abandoned or abused children. I would like to help them heal all the physical and emotionals hurts they had. Show them or let them feel loved and wanted. I will offer my time and resources for them and help them fulfill their dreams in life.

14. What are your facial or beauty regimens that you do before you go to sleep?

Since I don't wear any make up, I just wash my face with Pond's facial wash or Clinique's. If I'm not too lazy, after the facial wash, I use an astringent (from my derma) to clean my face again then put on a moisturizer before I go to bed. For extra beauty regimens, I also take a hot bath twice a day, go for facial treatments twice a week, visit the derma every 6 months, eats lots of fruits, takes 10 glasses of water everyday, takes vitamins C and E, drinks Reliv shakes.

During the day, when I go out, I make sure I put a moisturizer with SPF to protect my skin from the sun. Another secret, I whisper "Let the beauty of the Lord my God shine thru me"....

15. If you are to start a new blog focusing mainly on a particular topic or niche, what would your niche blogging be all about?

I would be blogging on the prevention of corruption in our society, mainly in our government. I would share everything I've seen in my ten years of work in the government. How to detect fraudulent projects, ghost projects/ghost purchases, overpriced materials/ supplies (like the fertilizer scam, swine scam, computer scam), sub-standard materials (for infra projects, expired medicines/vaccines for health centers, expensive books made of newsprints, etc.) negotiated bidding or rigged bidding, the flow of money from the bribe-giver to the funder (govt. official) and how to make sure the people's (taxpayers) hard-earned money goes to the right projects/beneficiaries.

Thanks Julie for your Weekly Questions. Your questions made me think real hard on some issues I've been wanting to blog about. I would be working on it right after I did this post.

How To Save On Fuel...

Rising fuel prices affect us all. And since fuel costs eat up a large percentage of our household budgets, here's few practical tips to help you make the most out of your fuel.

Watch your tires
Overused or poorly inflated tires can slow down the car and increase fuel consumption. For the right inflation instructions, check the car’s manual or the label at the inside edge of the driver’s door. Remember, tire pressure depends on the type of vehicle you drive. Motorcycles will have a lower tire pressure than sedans.

Check the Engine
Engine Oil darkens as you use your vehicle. Dark and thick engine oil will result to less efficient fuel consumption. It is advisable to change the engine oil every 10,000 kilometers of travel. Dirty air filters could also affect your fuel consumption as it blocks the needed supply of air for the engine to perform well. Make sure you have your vehicle checked for maintenance at least once a year.

Remove those extra cargos
Unnecessary cargo adds weight to the vehicle. The more weight the vehicle has, the more fuel it will need to accelerate. Reduce clutter in your car’s interior and trunk by removing hardly used items such as bags, shoes, coolers, clothes, etc. Fuel also increases the car’s weight. For city driving, it is best to load only half of your vehicle’s fuel capacity.

Shift to higher gears
Driving on low gear eats up fuel fast. Always shift to a higher gear to reduce fuel consumption.

Avoid Idling
It is better to turn off your engine when waiting. Avoid the rush hour by scheduling your travel time or taking alternative routes.

Plan your trips
Avoid going in circles. Take note all of the places you need to go to and arrange them according to their proximity. You will not only save fuel but also save time and effort.

How’s Your Driving?
Do you drive with a heavy foot? Don’t put the pedal to the metal – this eats up more fuel. When accelerating, step on the gas pedal lightly until you reach the desired speed. On highways, it is best to limit your speed from 60 to 80 kph.

Whether you take a motorcycle or a truck, these tips will make sure that you maximize every liter of fuel that you put in your vehicle. (And lessen your carbon footprint too!)
